Dave Ramsey often suggests paying things with cash in order to actually feel it.
There’s something wrong with me.
I don’t “feel” a purchase with cash, but I surely do with my debit card, why?
Because I can see what I spent immediately on my phone’s bank app.
And there’s a record of it.
For years.
“Oh, man that burrito was terrible!”
“I loved those shoes, that was a great buy!”
And MATH just happened.
$20 bill? Don’t feel it.
But my banking app:
-$20.00
ouch!
Cash feels like play money.
I’m wracking my brain as to why.
Because I didn’t have a lot of it most of my life?
Because I have travelled a lot and foreign currency seems funny and US cash seems funny when I return?
Because I’m a Gen X computer nerd? Spreadsheets and accounting and apps make me gaga?
Maybe a combination of all these but it’s mostly the accounting.
Seeing the debit of -$20.00 makes me feel it.
How about you?
What makes you “feel” money when you spend it?
